Tert-butyl methacrylate (TBMA) is an ester derived from methacrylic acid, serving as a key raw material in polymer synthesis. As a functional monomer, it comprises a highly reactive methacrylate moiety paired with a cyclic hydrophobic group. TBMA can be copolymerized with a broad range of monomers, including (meth)acrylic acid and its corresponding salts, amides, and esters; various (meth)acrylates; acrylonitrile; maleic acid esters; vinyl acetate; vinyl chloride; vinylidene chloride; styrene; butadiene; unsaturated polyesters; and drying oils, among others. Like other common acrylates such as butyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate, it is also suitable for use in emulsion polymerization processes.

A valuable feedstock for chemical synthesis, TBMA readily undergoes addition reactions with numerous organic and inorganic compounds. When incorporated into polymers, it endows the resulting materials with a host of desirable properties, including chemical resistance, enhanced adhesion, hydrophobicity, increased hardness, scratch resistance, heat resistance, high solids content, and improved weatherability.
